Position Overview:
  • Senior Network Engineer classification is not a part of the Network Engineer career series but is the advanced working and technical lead level network engineer.
  • Incumbents work under general direction and regularly provide technical direction to several network administrators.
  • Architects complex, multiple-platform local area networks (LANs) and wide area networks (WANs); defines network strategy development and deployment options.
  • Researches, analyzes, identifies and defines technology trends/products/concepts.
  • Outlines and defines required process changes due to changing requirements and technology.
  • Mentors other network engineers; and does other related work as required.
 
Responsibilities:
  • Performs a variety of activities related to the analysis, installation, programming, application and troubleshooting of networking systems and related equipment for Company needs; resolves technology problems and provides for system enhancements; provides input and recommendations concerning the development and implementation of project specifications, goals, objectives and timelines.
  • Coordinates information and resources to assure proper and timely installation, maintenance, modification and repair of network systems, equipment and devices; administers, evaluates and modifies network systems to assure proper security and operation; monitors and inspects projects to assure accuracy, completeness and compliance with Company technology and proper adaptation with existing systems.
  • Provides technical support and assistance to network customers; participates in answering and directing questions and concerns from Company personnel, departments and internal department inquiries; assists field technicians with installation, network connection and other technical issues as required; provides training and work direction to personnel as required.
  • Performs a variety of preventive security monitoring activities; evaluates systems for unnecessary or unsafe activities and develops solutions to avoid exposures; identifies and corrects errors and performance flaws; performs regular backups of operating systems to assure adequate network information availability.
  • Communicates with Company personnel, vendors, customers and outside agencies to exchange information, coordinate activities and resolve issues or concerns; serves as a liaison between the Company and outside vendors concerning system and program installations and upgrades as directed.
  • Participates in a variety of other assigned activities such as developing and maintaining procedural manuals, flow charts and diagrams.
  • Designs, implements, monitors and maintains enterprise networks using LAN/WAN inter-networking technology, including network protocols and management systems, using diagnostic tools.
  • Configures, installs, operates and maintains network hardware, appliances, software and related servers.
  • Evaluates and recommends network hardware and related hardware and software.
 
Required Qualifications:
  • Current network architectures, technological developments and industry trends in area of expertise
  • Policies and objectives of assigned programs and activities
  • Principles, practices and methods of WAN/LAN networking including fiber-optic and copper cable systems, data circuits, routers, switches, hubs, network operating systems, network appliances, firewalls and security
  • A broad range of computer and networking software and hardware systems and related technologies
  • Installation, configuration and maintenance of WAN/LAN networking and related hardware and software
  • Computer/network systems infrastructure requirements and standards, security systems, applications, procedure and techniques
  • Contract documents and specifications
  • Interpersonal skills using tact, patience and courtesy
  • Oral and written communication skills
  • Information Technology Department's strategic direction and goals
  • Perform a variety of activities related to the analysis, installation and troubleshooting of networking systems and related equipment for Company needs
  • Analyze and assess computer/network architecture requirements, determine optimum, cost-effective solutions and make recommendations
  • Plan, develop, coordinate and support multiple projects
  • Provide training, technical support and assistance to network customers and subordinate personnel
  • Design, develop and implement new networks or network modifications and design solutions for network problems and malfunctions
  • Stay abreast of emerging and changing technologies and adapt to changing technology and constraints
  • Work effectively with others including those of diverse perspectives and possess strong interpersonal skills such as listening, speaking, advisory, mediation, reconciliation and consensus building
  • Maintain positive working relationships and communicate effectively, both orally and in writing, with resource managers, customers, vendors, peers, subordinates, other government agencies and the public
  • Foster a spirit of teamwork and advocacy when meeting with staff and members of departments

  • Education and Experience:
    • A combination of education, training, and experience resulting in the required knowledge, skills, and abilities.
    • An example of qualifying education and experience includes:
      • Either A:
        • Graduation from an accredited four-year college or university with a bachelor's degree in computer science or a related field.
        • In addition, four years of experience involving the analysis, installation, programming, application and/or troubleshooting of networking systems and related equipment.
      • B:
        • An associates degree or 60 semester units or 90 quarter units from an accredited college or university or completion from a job-related, accredited vocational institution.
        • In addition, six years of experience involving the analysis, installation, programming, application and/or troubleshooting of networking systems and related equipment.
 
Salary: $120000.00-$130000.00/year
